Sclerotherapy is a popular procedure for eliminating varicose veins and spider veins. If you are looking for leg veins treatment to ease the pain and discomfort or because you find them ugly, get the facts on sclerotherapy.

Sclerotherapy is an effective treatment for destroying spider veins and varicose veins. Sclerotherapy has been in use since 1930s. The procedure involves injecting of a salt solution directly into the affected veins for obliterating them. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessels and causes them to swell and stick with one another. It also results in clotting of the blood and blocks the blood circulation in the vein. With the passage of time, the vessel turns into a scar tissue that becomes dull and light in appearance. Very fine needle is used for injecting the salt solution into the leg vein. Some patients experience mild discomfort and cramping when the solution is being injected. But this feeling lasts only for a few seconds.

The whole procedure lasts for only 15-30 minutes. It is performed in the doctor’s clinic and the patients are allowed to go back home the same day. However, patients are advised not to do aerobic exercises or strenuous exercises for a few days following the surgery.
