Are your cosmetic medical records safe?

This question is not one that you would normally think to ask, however the recent discovery of medical records of children left unsecured in an abandoned Australian clinic makes you consider the question. The clinic is in Hawthorn, an inner suburb of Melbourne Australia. It seems the records were at the clinic for around three years.  Luckily, the records were seized yesterday by Victoria's Health Services Commissioner, who will instigate and investigation into this seeming privacy breach.
As Victorian Department of Health officials and members of the police privacy unit looked on, Health Services Commissioner Beth Wilson, the Victorian Health Services Commissioner, took custody of the patient information from the building which has been vacant since 2008. While some files were in boxes, other had been clearly disturbed.

The action has been credited to the Australian newspaper for reporting that confidential records had been left "strewn throughout and unlocked" premise.  Beth Wilson was initially focused on getting the documents to a secure premise in the Departments achives.  She will then investigate who the holder of the records should have been.  The holder of the records are responsible for storage under the Act. Penalties up to $100,000 apply if action has not been taken after receving a warning.
